I still get a little queasy thinking about how La Familia exited The Basketball Tournament this summer. They had every opportunity to beat Eberlein Drive, but a flurry of missed free throws and some Ole Miss-caliber cringy gamesmanship ended Archie Goodwin and Kahlil Whitney’s redemption tour earlier than Big Blue Nation wanted. I’m not sure if this makes La Familia’s loss more or less palatable, but Eberlein Drive lost in the TBT Finals to The Aftershocks, 82-67.

Comprised primarily of Wichita State alumni, The Aftershocks earned home court advantage throughout the tournament after teams ahead of them in ticket sales, namely La Familia and The Ville, were eliminated. Now they will split (extreme Dr. Evil voice) one MILLION dollars amongst the players and coaches.

In front of 9,000 fans inside Wichita State’s arena, Archie Goodwin’s former TBT team, Elberlein Drive, got down by 10 points early and never fully recovered. Players with Commonwealth ties, Anthony Slaughter (Western Kentucky) and Pedro Bradshaw (Bellarmine), each chipped in three points apiece, but this game was all Aftershocks.

The Elam Ending was as erratic as ever, with grown men losing their collective basketball minds by heaving up desperation hero-ball shots, but the Wichita State alumni remained composed enough to finish the job in anticlimactic fashion at the free throw line.

The TBT has evolved into one of the most entertaining sporting events of the summer. An incredible injection of nostalgia mixed with equal parts quality and chaotic basketball makes it a good way to spend a summer afternoon.

Goodwin and other former Cats have vowed to return to La Familia next season in the TBT, a budding tradition that fans have now grown to anticipate after two seasons under their belt. Just wait until next year.
