Texas Tech guard Mac McClung removes his name from transfer portal

Go ahead and check this Kentucky target off the list for potential additions.

Mac McClung, a junior guard who spent last season at Texas Tech but declared he would put his name in the transfer portal on April 11, has announced that he will remove his name from the portal. He will either continue to entertain the NBA Draft process or return to the Red Raiders under first-year head coach Mark Adams for the 2021-22 season.

Multiple outlets reported the news with McClung confirming it himself on Twitter.

Once a three-star prospect out of high school from Gate City, VA, McClung would have had to apply for an immediate transfer waiver to play right away if he were to have gone through with his transfer. Newly introduced NCAA transfer rules now allow for an immediate one-time transfer, however, McClung initially transferred to Texas Tech after two seasons at Georgetown.

KSR spoke with McClung’s high school coach, Scott Vermillion, last week, shortly after McClung’s name was put in the portal. Vermillion explained that the 6-foot-2 combo guard was ultimately looking for a spot that would help prepare him for the NBA. Texas recently hired Chris Beard away from Texas Tech to be the Longhorns’ new head coach and the belief was that they had the inside track at landing McClung.

Roughly a week later, it would appear that McClung will stick around in Lubbock or see if he can sneak onto an NBA’s team Draft Big Board.

During his first season at Texas Tech, McClung was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year behind averages of 15.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game on a shooting split of 41.9/34.3/79.3. He came into college known as a high-flyer but has steadily improved his overall game the past three seasons.
