Over the past four and a half seasons, Butch Jones has earned a reputation as the corniest coach in college football for his canon of cringeworthy quotes. With rumblings that Saturday’s game could be Jones’ last as the Tennessee’s head coach, let’s toast him with ten of his most ridiculous sayings.

1. “Championship of Life”

This will always be number one. Tennessee entered the 2016 season as a top ten team many thought could be a national championship contender, but, as has become the pattern, the Vols fell well short of expectations. Towards the end of the season, Butch was asked about his senior class and told reporters that, while they may not have won the SEC East, “they’ve won the biggest championship — that’s the championship of life.”

2. “A Five-Star Heart”

In February, Butch justified his 17th ranked recruiting class by saying the “only five-star that we even concern ourselves with is a five-star heart.”

3. “You don’t have to get a physical rep to get a rep. You can get a leadership rep.”

A few weeks ago, Butch broke out another cliche when he said it’s important for his players to get “leadership reps” as well as physical reps. I’m guessing flipping off the crowd does not qualify as a leadership rep.

4. “Tennessee is not okay with being 3-4, and Butch Jones is not okay with being 3-4.”

Butch said this yesterday and it further solidifies my long-held belief that anyone who speaks in third person is a pyschopath.

5. “We learned about the value of being ready vs. the value of being prepared.”

Butch said this after Tennessee’s 24-21 loss at South Carolina last season, which came after a bye week. In most people’s minds, being ready and being prepared are the same thing, but not to Butch.

6. “We just won our eighth game. That hasn’t been done here in a while.”

Butch said that last season…after his team went 9-4 the season before.

7. “We have a five-game playoff and a lot left to play for.”

Butch literally said this Saturday after losing to Alabama. Coach speak is one thing, but can we avoid using the word “playoff” when your team has a losing record?

Eye-roll meter: “Nuh-uh!” Oprah

8. “I thought we did all the things it takes to play winning football except one element, and that’s score touchdowns.”

This was after losing to South Carolina 15-9 a few weeks back.

9. “Brick by Brick”

Butch’s most famous cliche is his “Brick by Brick” metaphor, which Farm Bureau Insurance made into an ad back in 2013:

10. “These last two years have been some of the best years in the last 20 years of Tennessee football.”

Butch said this last month. I think plenty of Tennessee fans would beg to differ.
