Today's Football notes are brought to you by KSR College, more specifically by a bright-eyed and bushy tailed intern who was just excited to get to stand on the field and mingle with the "big timers" of Lexington Media. @mjp18 for giving me some standing room; not only am I new to this whole media thing, but I'm not very tall... which seems to be a basic criteria for sports coverage.
On to the Football... the overall message of both Coach Stoops and Brown was that
the offense whipped the defense today. Stoops started off by saying that he had never had one side of the ball dominate the other in a scrimmage like he had today. He was very pleased with the offense, but was "very disappointed," in the defensive output in today's practice.
So, how much better was the offense today?
Stoops: "Much better, much better.
It wasn't even close today. The offense didn't really have a great day in practice [Friday] and they just had a mentality today, that's what I was most proud of. They had a toughness and went out there and really executed and played well."
What was up with the defense? In the previous practice sessions the defense was the dominate side of the ball; what changed?
Stoops: "Those same things. I didn't see great execution, I didn't see great toughness, I saw poor leverage and just some poor football on the defensive side of the ball.
I saw a lot of bad body language and just some things that were really disappointing."
Just how good WAS the offense today, Coach Brown?
Brown: "
Today was the first day where I really thought we looked like an SEC offense. I thought our guys had good energy, finished plays, and there's no magic potion in the plays. They came prepared to play today, and every spring that's just how it goes. The defense got the best of us the last couple practices... but we bounced back today."
An SEC offense? You don't say!?
More positives from the offense:
- There weren't any turnovers or penalties from the offense today, which is a definite sign of improvement.
- WR's did a much better job of catching the ball today and made some big plays.
- The overall efficiency of the offensive unit was much better today.
- Balance was there today. The offense hit some home run plays and also sustained some long drives.
Coach Eliot "escaped out the side door" before he could give any comment, but I don't blame his motives
In Quarterback news,
Coach Brown said that the three QB's had their best day collectively today. They had energy, and had a "next play mentality" that had been lacking in previous practices. Before today, when one of them had made a bad play, their body language changed but today was different. They were cheering each other on, and really seemed to get excited for one another. Neither Stoops nor Brown would say if any of them has an edge on the other, and the starting role will most likely be decided in fall camp.
Brown: "I wish one of them would step up and take charge (laughs) but all of them did a good job today.
It will come down to the fall camp."
He went on to explain that in the four week fall period, he likes to have a two week "try-out" period to determine the starters and then the other two weeks are left for development.
