Completing 20 innings Thursday night, play between the Legends and Shorebird was stalled a little after 1 a.m. due to rain. Play picked back up in the top of the 21st inning Friday night at 6:05 p.m. The game ended soon after thanks to a home run from Marten Gasparini in the 21st inning to give Lexington the winning run. For both the Legends and Shorebirds, 21 innings is a team record for longest game played. The game is also the longest game played in the South Atlantic League this season. A 21-inning game ought to add some fuel to the fire for the "baseball takes too long to play" crowd.A historical #WhitakerWin as the Legends defeat @shorebirds in 2⃣1⃣innings ... the longest in Legends history! @theGreatGaspy w/ winning HR! pic.twitter.com/Pxuc8iH7YS
