TV

americans-keyart There's a great deal of excellent television to look forward to this January. What happened to fall premieres? Perhaps Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings assassinated them? Yea, definitely. Season two of FX's criminally underwatched Cold War drama, The Americans, was possibly the best drama in a year of diverse, acclaimed programs. The second season pushed the Soviet spies ever further, challenging their love of family (their created American one) versus country (their supposed one, true allegiance). While there is plenty of sexy action and uncomfortable spy sex to entertain, the real star of this show is the drama at home and the knowledge that sooner rather than later, the Jennings' two worlds will inevitably collide. The Americans returns to FX January 28. Get to binge-watching. The other shows I'm looking forward to in 2015--the final season of Parks & Recreation (*sob) and the second season of Comedy Central's Broad City. If you follow me on Twitter, this will come as no surprise. Amy Poehler has her greedy hands all over both of the best comedy's on television, while one is sadly ending the other is just beginning! Celebrate! In new programming, Richmond already covered Rainn Wilson's new show, Backstrom, which I'm cautiously optimistic about, but I'm actually looking forward to one other series premiere! Just one. Togetherness is a dark, family comedy on HBO, created by the Duplass brothers and starring the actor one (Mark!) along with TV veteran, Melanie Lynskey. With the Duplass brothers and HBO behind it, this show's got a lot of potential. __________________________________________________________________________________________ tumblr_n57hosCsvq1qeuzrdo1_1280

Movies

Yes, I'm looking forward to The Avengers, Star Wars, Mad Max, and Jurassic Park franchises returning in 2015, but what about Pitch Perfect 2!!?? Anna Kendrick and her Broadway pipes continue to take over the big screen, along with favorites like Elizabeth Banks, Rebel Wilson, and the Green Bay Packers, this movie is bound to annihilate the box office. What else is there really.... The above photo is sadly not shot from Pitch Perfect, but from the set of Guillemero del Toro's, Crimson Peak--starring Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska (duh), and Charlie Hunnam (and robots!?) Set in a Victoian mansion, young Wasikowska is swept off her feet by Mr. Hiddleston and returns to her ancestral home to find ghosts and an angry Jessica Chastain waiting! EEP! This gothic film is guaranteed to be visually breathtaking, and I'm really looking forward to it--mostly because it's not being directed by Tim Burton. And del Toro had this to say, which made me even more excited!
I wanted to tackle a great adult story for a female lead. I think it's great when the female lead [is in] a normal romantic story, but then we live past that. Past getting the guy – fuck all that shit – we see her becoming her own person. We do what is done in gothic romance. We have the thriller aspect of it, we have the romance, brutal moments, and we have scary ghosts – but scarier people than ghosts. It's a beautiful confection, and I hope you enjoy it.
Other movies I'm looking forward to: Sisters -- Tina Fey and Amy Poehler being sisters. Perfect. Trainwreck -- Amy Schumer's written a Judd Apatow comedy! Grrrrlll power. The movie also stars a bevy of weirdos--Bill Hader, Daniel Radcliffe, Brie Larson, Tilda Swinton and LeBron James. Jupiter Ascending -- This could be a real trainwreck. Sicario -- Emily Blunt is in the FBI! __________________________________________________________________________________________ Sisqo-that-grape-juice-2014-1110jpg

Music

Sisqo, Imagine Dragons, and Kid Rock are all dropping new albums in February, so let's go ahead and just have our nuclear holocaust then, shall we? In reality, I'm looking forward to festival season, and Coachella, the first huge festival of the year and typically the tastemaker for what's to come really dropped the ball in my opinion, I'm holding out hope for 2015 (for now.) And even more Meghan Trainor!
