The UNC Players Not Named Caleb Wilson

You should already know all about Caleb Wilson, the freshman phenom Kentucky nearly landed, who is the ACC Rookie of the Week and a walking double-double. Wilson has gotten most of the pregame attention. He’ll get the loudest crowd reaction, and he is the focus of Kentucky’s scouting report.

But North Carolina didn’t get to 6-1 on Wilson alone. If the Cats are going to win tonight, they’ll have to deal with these other Tar Heels, too.

Kyan Evans: The Fill-In Point Guard

Taking over for Seth Trimble, who played two games before an arm injury, UNC point guard Kyan Evans leads the team in assists at 4.4 per game and had a season-high seven in a matchup against NC Central. Evans is also capable of hitting four threes in a game, which he did in the first game of the season.

The junior from Kansas City isn’t flashy, but he’s a steady lead guard who transferred in after two seasons at Colorado State. He’s coming off a 0-for-5 game from three in the 16-point loss to Michigan State in Fort Myers. This will be his first true road test as a Tar Heel.

Caleb Wilson may get the headlines, but UNC’s center might be the most important matchup tonight. Henri Veesaar is on the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award watch list and leads Carolina in blocks at 1.6 per game while shooting 64.6% from the floor. He just scored 24 in a game, matching Wilson for the most by a UNC player so far, and averages 15.9 points and 8.3 assists. Malachi Moreno and Brandon Garrison will need to play well to keep Veesaar from being a difference-maker.

Luka Bogavac: The Shooter

Only a freshman, Bogavac is UNC’s leading three-point shooter with 13 triples on the season and once fired off 18 field-goal attempts in a game, including 11 from deep. He’s not shy. If Wilson or Veesaar draws double teams, Bogavac is the shooter Kentucky must find quickly. He’ll take volume shots, and Rupp crowd energy won’t faze him. He’s 22 and from Montenegro and plays with confidence.

If Wilson is the headline, these are some of his supporting cast to look out for. Go Cats.
