Three interesting things around the SEC this weekend

It was impressive, but there were some other very interesting things that went on in the SEC outside of Kentucky. Missouri beat up on Tennessee and Butch was finally relieved of his duties as head coach of the Vols, the No. 10 Auburn Tigers absolutely spanked the No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, and No. 2 Alabama went down to the wire with No. 16 Mississippi State on the road. Let's break this weekend down: BYE BYE Butch: We knew it was coming, we knew it was just a matter of time before Butch Jones would be done as the head football coach at Tennessee. Well, that time happened today after the winless-in-conference-play Vols dropped to Mizzou on Saturday 50-17. UT Athletic Director John Currie made this Statement about Jones: "Late (Saturday) night, it was evident this was probably the direction we needed to go for the best of all concerned." "We wanted our student-athletes to have the best possible chance of success," he said. "We want Coach Jones and his family to be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve." "We want to be able to focus, from my perspective, on the search going forward." Tennessee will owe Jones $8.125 million in a buyout. So who does Tennessee look to get now? Before I go into that, let me just say Tennessee football and Indiana basketball are about the same. Both fan bases are stuck in the past. They are both irrelevant programs in those respective sports right now. Recruiting isn't done the way it was back in the day when your programs were great. You expect way too much out of a program that isn't what it used to be. Other schools have passed you in many aspects. I know Butch wasn't getting it done with the talent he had, but you think you are Alabama and you arent. So who could Tennessee potentially hire? Here are some candidates: Mike Norvell of Memphis Dan Mullen of Mississippi State Justin Fuente of Virginia Tech Chip Kelly former Oregon and NFL head coach Jon Gruden former NFL head coach Matt Campbell of Iowa State Jeff Brohm of Purdue Maybe Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State? Choose wisely Mr. Currie, or Rocky Top fans will continue lighting matches to this dumpster fire of a program. The Bulldogs got absolutely dismantled on Saturday. The No. 10 team in the CFP rankings, Auburn Tigers beat up on No. 1 UGA 40-17. Georgia couldn't get their run game going and really just couldn't get much of anything going. Kirk Herbstreit tweeted yesterday he would knock No. 1 Georgia completely out of the top four in his new CFP rankings. He puts No. 10 Auburn at No. 6 after that huge win, and he thinks No. 5 Oklahoma is the new No. 1 now after the 38-20 beating they put on the No. 6  ranked TCU Horned Frogs. He also has No. 7 Miami in the top 4 now at No. 3 with a massive 41-8 win over No. 3 Notre Dame. Lastly, he keeps No. 2 Bama in at No. 2 and keeps Clemson in at No. 4. https://twitter.com/KirkHerbstreit/status/929580749317181440 After Notre Dame's pathetic performance against Miami, is UGA's big win at Notre Dame from earlier on this season that big anymore? If Georgia can win out and win the SEC Championship either against Auburn or Alabama, they will certainly still get a shot at the College Football Playoff. But do they have it in them? Now if Auburn wins out, including beating Georgia again in Atlanta, they have to be in the College Football Playoff. That's a given, even with two losses on the season. Photo by Butch Dill, Getty Images Alabama hangs on at Mississippi State: This was by far the most competitive game amongst the ranked college football teams in the CFP poll this weekend. No. 2 Alabama went down to Starkville yesterday and went down to the wire with No. 16 Mississippi State. Going into halftime, the game was tied at 14, and the Bulldogs were actually beating the Tide 21-17 after the third. In the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 24 with 25 seconds to go when true freshmen DeVonta Smith caught a pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts for a go-ahead touchdown to put the Crimson Tide ahead 31-24. Nick Fitzgerald and State had a couple of hail mary opportunities to the end-zone with seconds left but were unable to come up on any of them. 31-24 was your final.
