Today on KSR: Johnny Juzang, Boys' Sweet 16, Pro Day, Kellan Grady

Let’s be real. The offseason is a struggle at times here at Kentucky Sports Radio. While some days are an endless stream of transfer news, spring football, and sassy John Calipari tweets, others have us scraping the bottom of the barrel for mock draft updates and throwback clips. Thankfully, today is the former, not the latter. There is a ton of stuff happening all across the UK Sports spectrum today, so let’s dive in.

Johnny Juzang leads UCLA to the Final Four

We have to start with the topic on most fans’ minds this morning: Johnny Juzang. The former Cat scored 28 of UCLA’s 51 points in the Elite Eight win over Michigan last night, keeping the Bruins’ magical run from the First Four to the Final Four alive. Juzang scored 14 of UCLA’s first 16 points and even played on an injured ankle in the second half. Through five NCAA Tournament games, he has 107 points, which ranks behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in UCLA history.

It’s natural to watch Juzang go off and wonder what could have been if he’d stayed at Kentucky. During a feature on CBS Sports on Sunday, he reiterated that he left Kentucky after his freshman season because he wanted to return home to Southern California and be close to his family during the pandemic.

“With everything going on in the world, I just wanted to come home and be a Bruin,” Juzang said. “They just want me to do what’s best for me and make me happy but inside, you know what they wanted. You know where they wanted me to go. It’s great being so close to home. Being able to come home and have dinner, do some laundry, see my sister, see my parents.”

UCLA, an 11-seed, is now tied for the lowest seed to ever make the Final Four. They’ll face No. 1 Gonzaga Saturday night, and as someone who does NOT want the Bulldogs to go undefeated for the purely petty reason that the 2015 Kentucky team did not, I’ll be cheering hard for them. Go, Johnny, go!

Here’s the schedule for the Final Four:

  • Saturday, 5:15 p.m. ET: #2 Houston vs. #1 Baylor
  • Saturday, 8:34 p.m. ET: #11 UCLA vs. #1 Gonzaga

If you had that in your bracket, pat yourself on the back and go to Vegas.

The Boys’ Sweet 16 begins

Today, eight teams will begin their quest to win the state title. KSR has followed all of these squads through the region tournaments and will have three people, Drew Franklin, Zack Geoghegan, and Troy Howell, at Rupp today to follow the action. Here’s the bracket:

If you’re going to the games, keep in mind that masks are required when you’re not actively eating or drinking and the clear bag policy is in place. You can also stream the games online (with subscription), listen on the radio, or simply head to KSBar, where we’ll be showing them all on our big screens.

We’ll hear from Kellan Grady

The Davidson grad transfer will take his turn in front of the media on Zoom this afternoon. I spent some time yesterday afternoon chatting with Matt McKillop, Davidson’s associate head coach, on what Kentucky fans can expect from the talented combo guard. It’s a long read, but an encouraging one.
