Today on KSR: Thanksgiving leftovers, Black Friday

by:Jack Pilgrim11/27/20

Good morning, Big Blue Nation! Happy Friday to each and every one of you. I hope your Thanksgiving festivities were enjoyable and you filled your stomachs with delicious turkey, side dishes and desserts from start to finish.

After taking a much-needed day of rest Thursday, the KSR crew is back in action today with all the Thanksgiving leftovers you need to get you through Black Friday and into the weekend, where Kentucky football and basketball is on the docket.

No Detroit Mercy game

In case you missed the news earlier this week, Brad Calipari and the Detroit Mercy Titans were forced to pull out of the Bluegrass Showcase due to a positive COVID-19 test within the program, meaning Kentucky does not have a basketball game this evening as previously scheduled.

John Calipari said after the game that they will attempt to host the Titans at some point in mid-December.

“This has been a tough four, five days because Brad (Calipari) was coming home,” Calipari said. “Brad was going to play in Rupp Arena. Now, we’re still going to schedule the game (versus Detroit Mercy) for the middle of December, so he’ll be back. But, you know, I was looking forward to having my son on the other team, coaching my team and cheering for him.”

Kentucky’s next game is on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET against the Richmond Spiders.

Kentucky football loses a commitment

While the majority of us were chowing down on Thanksgiving meals and watching football, three-star receiver Armond Scott announced his decommitment from the University of Kentucky,

“After having a deep conversation and reconsidering my commitment, my family and I felt as if it was best for me to re-open my recruitment for many reasons,” he announced. “I would like to thank Coach Marrow, Coach Stoops, and The Kentucky football staff for giving me the opportunity to come play at Kentuckcy but at this time I will re-opening my recruitment. Thank you BBN for everything.”

Scott originally committed to Kentucky back in May, choosing the Wildcats over Cincinnati, Boston College, Michigan State, Toledo, Wake Forest and Akron, among others. He is considered the No. 84 wideout in the country by Rivals.

Following the departure, Kentucky now has three wide receiver commitments in the 2021 class: four-star Dekel Crowdus and three-stars Chauncey Magwood and Christian Lewis. The early signing period begins December 16.

Will Kentucky have enough to head to Florida?

After missing ten players due to injury or COVID-19 last week against Alabama, Kentucky will be without even more scholarship players against Florida in Gainesville.

UK head coach Mark Stoops said Wednesday evening that Kentucky will be without 18 players and 10 staff members due to injuries and COVID-19 contact tracing. Today’s test results will determine if the Wildcats will be able to board a plane and head to Gainesville.

“We can’t afford anymore,” Stoops said. “We get tested again tomorrow morning and let’s hope — we can’t afford any more.”

“To say it’s not strange, that’s an understatement because everyday you’re holding on,” the UK head coach added. “Every time my trainer and Dan Brezowitz are walking down my hall, ‘Please, stay away.’ I’m trying to keep my distance from those guys and we’re getting people dinged a couple times a day.”

Will Kentucky be able to take the field against the Gators on Saturday? We’ll find out today.

Kansas lost

While football is always the main focus on Thanksgiving when it comes to sports, fans were treated to a phenomenal college basketball matchup between No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 6 Kansas, with the top-ranked Bulldogs defeating the Jayhawks by a final score of 102-90.

Three different Gonzaga players scored 23 points or more, with Drew Timme finishing with 25 points and six rebounds, Jalen Suggs adding 24 points, eight assists and four rebounds, and Corey Kispert finishing with 23 points and four rebounds.

In the loss, Kansas guard Marcus Garrett managed 22 points, followed by Ochai Agbaji with 17 points and four assists.

Kentucky will take on Kansas in the Champions Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 9:30 p.m. ET. on ESPN.
