Peny Boone, considered the top available running back in the transfer portal by On3, is heavily considering joining the Kentucky Wildcats.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Boone is down to just three options: Kentucky, Louisville, and Florida State. The former Toldeo ball carrier officially entered his name into the portal on Tuesday night. Boone was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 after racking up 1,400 rushing yards (7.2 YPC) and 15 touchdowns on the ground for the Rockets.

“These are three of the nation’s top football programs with a rich history of getting guys to the next level. All three schools have a need for a game-changer in the backfield,” Boone told On3. “I feel like schematically I am a great fit within each respective offensive system. The coaching staffs have been nothing but supportive and professional, and I look forward to calling one of these prestigious universities home.”

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound Boone began his college career at Maryland as a former four-star recruit from the 2020 class. He totaled just 258 rushing yards across two seasons with the Terrapins before transferring to Toledo for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Boone recorded 439 yards as a redshirt sophomore in 2022 before exploding in 2023 as a redshirt junior.

Boone earned an offer from Kentucky all the way back in 2018 and even visited Lexington in 2019 before later winding up at Maryland. He will not have to apply for a waiver and is eligible to play immediately in 2024.

Kentucky has already added one running back through the portal this offseason, Ohio State’s Chip Trayanum. UK’s running back room for 2024 also includes the likes of Demie Sumo-Karngbaye and Jamarion Wilcox plus incoming freshmen Tovani Mizell and Jason Patterson. However, with Ray Davis heading to the NFL Draft, Ramon Jefferson graduating, and JuTahn McClain transferring, there could be room for another rusher.

Could Boone be the one to fill that space?
