Tre Mitchell gives back at Franklin County Flyers Camp

The Kentucky Wildcats are making their way back to campus for the start of the fall semester with classes set to begin on Monday. How is fifth-year senior Tre Mitchell spending his last weekend off? Giving back to the community in Frankfort — just 25 miles away from Lexington.

Mitchell’s stepfather, Tony Bergeron, was named the head varsity basketball coach at Franklin County High School on July 23. With over 400 prep and high school basketball wins under his belt, along with Division I experience as an assistant at UMass, he’s looking to establish a winning culture at his new coaching stop in Frankfort both now and in the future. The now starts with the team’s current roster while the future is taking place at the Franklin County Flyers Camp, a youth camp at the school dedicated to teaching local kids the fundamentals of basketball.

Mitchell joined the campers at Franklin County this weekend to talk about his journey to the University of Kentucky and what it takes to be a student-athlete at the highest level — along with signing a few autographs along the way.

Giving back before the fall semester

The Wildcat forward’s mother Erin Tortorice-Bergeron shared a few clips and photos from the event on social media.

It wasn’t just Mitchell signing autographs for the campers, either. The graduate transfer also had the kids sign his shirt at the conclusion of camp as a token of gratitude for their participation.

“I’m getting everybody to sign it,” Mitchell said in the clip.

“Tre is always quick to do ANYTHING for kids,” Bergeron told KSR. “He’s always stopping to talk to them, take pictures, whatever they want. Obviously, this one was for family, but nonetheless, it’s something Tre always carved out time for. The campers REALLY enjoyed the question-and-answer time and appreciated the autographed camper shirts. Tre even asked the campers to all sign a shirt for him. The Flyers High School team enjoyed the interaction, as well. A true benefit for them too.”

Nicely done.

Mitchell, who signed with Kentucky in June, was a clear standout for the Wildcats during the team’s trip to Toronto for the 2023 GLOBL JAM. Leading the team in minutes with 32.5 per contest, the 6-foot-9 forward averaged 14.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals en route to a gold medal. Above all else, he showed off his potential as a face-up big, shooting 57.5% from the field and 44.4% from three primarily playing the five.

Beyond his impressive play on the floor, he’s also doing his part away from it, as well.
