Two UK Football Targets Commit to Penn State

Kentucky’s recruiting excursion to Pennsylvania did not go according to plan. Over the Fourth of July holiday weekend a pair of talented football players from the Quaker State had Kentucky hats on the table when they announced a commitment to Penn State.

Keon Wylie was the first domino to fall. An outside linebacker from Philadelphia, Wylie officially visited Lexington last weekend. Whatever happened on Kentucky’s campus was not enough to convince the three-star edge talent to leave his home state to play college football.

The following day in Pittsburgh Tyreese Fearbry picked Penn State over Pitt, Auburn and Kentucky. A lengthy edge rusher that drew comparisons to Josh Allen on his official visit, he would have been a big-time addition for the Wildcats. Instead, James Franklin received a little Citrus Bowl revenge. Fearbry is the Nittany Lions’ first commitment from the Pittsburgh City League in four decades.

Brad White was brought to Lexington to take Kentucky’s pass rush to the next level. It worked immediately for the former NFL assistant and he was promoted to defensive coordinator in short order. The success on the field is undeniable. You can’t exactly say the same thing on the recruiting trail.

A Rhode Island native, White has spent time in the northeast trying to convince players, particularly outside linebackers, to join Kentucky in the SEC. Entering his fourth season in Lexington, White has still yet to pull in a prospect from the area. Of course, White deploys his recruiting tactics elsewhere to solidify bonds to UK, but as of now it’s safe to say the Pennsylvania recruiting experiment has failed. Time to recalibrate.
