The Miami Heat will be down an All-Star to begin the 2025-26 season.

According to multiple reports, Heat guard Tyler Herro is expected to undergo surgery on his left foot and will miss time early on in the upcoming season. His surgery is reportedly scheduled for today (Friday, Sept. 19). Herro suffered an ankle injury in the middle of the summer that led to the decision to opt for surgery. Training camp begins Sept. 30.

“Herro received PRP and cortisone injections in recent weeks in hopes of avoiding surgery,” Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald wrote. “But the discomfort never subsided and surgery was deemed necessary to avoid more issues down the road.”

Herro, 25, is coming off his best season yet as a pro. The former Kentucky Wildcat averaged career-highs in points (23.9) and assists (5.5) per outing on shooting splits of 47.2/37.5/87.8 across 77 games played. He was named an NBA All-Star for the first time as a result.

With Herro leading the charge, Miami finished 37-45 last season, good enough for the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference and the final spot in the Play-In. The Heat was able to take down the Bulls and the Hawks to reach the first round of the Playoffs, but was promptly swept by the Cavaliers. That being said, the entire season was marred by the drama surrounding Jimmy Butler, who was very public with his displeasure as a member of the franchise before ultimately being traded to the Warriors.

Prior to Herro’s injury, BetMGM had Miami’s win total for next season set at 39.5. That number might drop with this new development. The Heat traded for Norman Powell and drafted Kasparas Jakucionis in the offseason, which should help with making up for Herro’s early-season absence, but if head coach Erik Spoelstra doesn’t see a bounce-back season from Bam Adebayo, another disappointing run to the Play-In might be in the cards.

While Herro was having the best offensive season of his career in 2024-25, Adebayo was having one of his worst. The 28-year-old forward was still one of the league’s top defenders, but his 18.1 points per game were his fewest since his third season (2019-20), while his 48.5 percent shooting mark was a career-low. Adebayo shot more threes last season (221) than his previous seven seasons combined (104).

We won’t know exactly how much time Herro is expected to miss until after his surgery, but reports indicate he will return to play at some point in the season. Miami will need him back sooner rather than later, although I won’t be surprised if Spoelstra finds ways to make it work in the meantime.

[UPDATE (4:00 p.m. ET): Herro is expected to miss eight weeks following successful surgery on Friday afternoon, per the Miami Heat]
