The BatCats concluded a successful opening weekend in Wilmington, NC with a 10-1 victory over Richmond on Saturday. Veterans Thomas Bernal and Ka’ai Tom each drove in three runs and Kyle Cody struck out six in four shutout innings en route to a one-sided contest to follow up an 11-7 win versus Ball State
on Friday.
UK jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
Along with Bernal and Tom, the Cats received offensive production from shortstop Connor Heady and freshman first baseman Evan White, both adding two hits. Senior Andrew Nelson took over for Cody on the mound in the fifth inning and struck out four batters in two innings. The bullpen would take care of the rest as Zack Brown and Dylan Dwyer combined for perfect innings in the seventh and eighth, while Zach Strecker and Spencer Jack closed out the game in the ninth.
The most impressive feat of the day came from senior rightfielder Storm Wilson, who scored four runs and stole a career-high four bases. Wilson became the first Wildcat to steal four bases in a game since Chris Bisson did so at Auburn in 2010.
UK will now travel to California for its next four games, beginning
this Thursday at USC followed by a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara. It will be a homecoming for two Golden State natives on UK’s team, Thomas Bernal and Spencer Jack.
And now I have “California” by Phantom Planet stuck in my head.
