UK has filed a trademark for Will Stein's 'Feed The Studs' motto

The University of Kentucky is leaning heavily into Will Stein‘s motto.

Not long after Stein was officially hired as the football program’s new head coach on Monday, the university filed a trademark for “Feed The Studs” on Tuesday morning. The application has been accepted, but not yet assigned to an examiner, per the government’s website. Shoutout to KSBoard user FinnaGoHam for the doing the digging.

Included in the trademark is an identification of goods and services that reads: “clothing; headwear; hats”. So get ready to buy some Feed The Studs hats and t-shirts, BBN. You can view the full details of the trademark by clicking the link here. It only cost the school a whopping $550 to pull it off, too. Not a bad investment, especially for a program that could use some extra PR this offseason.

The fan base is already fully bought into it being the new Kentucky football motto, too. Stein may or may not have gotten the idea from one Bobby Petrino, but he lived and breathed the tagline during his time as a successful offensive coordinator.

“Get your best players the ball as many times as possible. We say ‘Feed the Studs’. That’s our way to say it. It’s not rocket science,” Stein said at a coaching convention a few years ago. “Coach said it earlier — plays are highly overrated. I’m gonna talk spacing, they’re great plays, but they’re overrated. If we got trash players they don’t look as good. We have really good players at UTSA. So get your players the ball as many times as you can.”

During his OC tenures at UTSA and Oregon, Stein produced a top-25 offense that finished inside the top-20 in points per drive every season. The former Louisville quarterback runs an offense with spread elements that wants to establish the run first, chase completions in the short passing game, take explosive play swings, and mix tempos in an effort to control the pace.

High-scoring offenses were a rarity during the Mark Stoops era at Kentucky. Stein should change that from game one by feeding his studs.
