UK Men's Soccer Recap: Cats Fall to #14 UAB

Men's Soccer Photo via Regina Rickert Despite starting the season with a reasonably easier schedule, the UK Men’s Soccer squad has failed to find success so far this season. With a 2-4-0 record coming into today’s match, the Cats have found it hard to reach the back of the net, despite the return of veteran scorer Tyler Riggs. Unfortunately for the team, that wouldn’t change on Sunday, as Kentucky would fall in their first Conference USA match of the season. As I mentioned, Kentucky’s opening slate wasn’t nearly as menacing as it has been in the past, though the same couldn’t be said about today’s opponent, UAB. With a 4-1-1 record, the Blazers came into today’s match-up ranked as the 14th best program in the nation. Coming into today, UAB had netted 17 goals in 7 matches, and they didn’t wait long to get on the board against UK. Just three minutes in, UAB’s Alex Clay would find the back of the net off of a rebound. The Blazers would add on to their lead in the 30th minute off of a corner from Huang, which Svantesson would head into the goal. As mentioned before, the Cats have struggled to find the back of the net for the majority of the season, with only seven goals coming into today’s match. Nothing would change against UAB, and Kentucky’s lone goal of the day would come off of a penalty with seven seconds left in regulation. With only one goal scored so late, the Cats would fall yet again, giving them their 5th loss in only 7 matches. There’s no shame in losing to the 14th ranked team in the nation, though it would’ve been a nice boost for a squad that has struggled so much early on. Kentucky will be back in action against Old Dominion on Friday, October 4th. The game will be on the road, and hopefully the Cats pull themselves together by then. FINAL: UAB 2 - 1 UK  Boxscore   @DeanBowlingKSR
