Almost putting together a comeback, the Kentucky Softball team (29-10) lost to Auburn Softball Team (25-12) 4-2. In a complete turnaround from the 2019 series, where Auburn was swept, it looks like Kentucky is the one getting swept this time around.

With Rachel Lawson getting ejected at the top of the 7th, the Wildcats lost their second straight of the three-game series. Kentucky, who was ranked 12th before the start of the series, is certain to fall after a poor showing in Alabama.

Getting off to a strong start in the first inning, Auburn was able to score two runs off five hits, while the three errors committed by the Wildcats in the second pushed the needle farther in favor of Auburn 4-0. Continued errors in the 4th innings made the late comeback tougher. Kentucky was able to score two runs at the top of the 5th, thanks to a two-run home run by Kayla Kowalik, giving some hope to the fans.

Being the only bright spot for Kentucky, Kayla Kowalik extended her hitting streak to 19, and breaking the single-season runs record. Going 2-3 on her plate appearances, Kowalik was the only Wildcat with any RBI’s, while the only other two hits were provided by Tatum Spangler and Renee Abernathy. Two errors committed by star freshman Erin Coffel hurt the comeback tremendously, along with going 0-3 on the plate.

For Auburn, an impressive catch to start off the first innings seemed to encapsulate the rest of the game, as Auburn seemed to be firing on all cylinders. They have now won two straight series, while Kentucky has lost its last three series, going back to the start of April.

Kentucky and Auburn still have one more game left, set for Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
