UK Softball Falls Short in SEC Championship Game

Kentucky fell short in their first ever appearance in the SEC championship game to No. 5 Georgia 5-2. It was the Wildcats first time in program history making it to the semifinals and beyond, and a record setting number of wins in a season with 44, bettering last year’s record at 41 wins.
The Wildcats started freshman Meagan Prince on the mound instead of going with sophomore pitcher Kelsey Nunley who had started the three previous games in the tournament. The Bulldogs took the lead early on the Cats after a fielding error by Meagan Prince, which gave Georgia an extra out to work with, eventually leading to a RBI single in the bottom of the second.
Offensively, the Cats had trouble hitting Georgia’s ace pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson, whose record was 28-7 previous to the start of the game. Kentucky had only 1 hit, which was a dribbler to first base through the first four innings, had three errors and allowed four runs before Lauren Cumbess replaced Meagan Prince on the mound. The Bulldogs scored one more run on a solo homerun and Wilkinson continued to shut out Kentucky’s batters. The Cats last chance came in the 7th inning when Nikki Sagermann led off with a solo homerun and Griffin Joiner followed it up with one of her own, cutting the lead 5-2. However, that Cats failed to produce any more runs, falling 5-2 to Georgia in the championship game.
