This National Signing Day has been unlike any other for Kentucky football fans, particularly in the curious case of Kiyaunta Goodwin. While some fans were unprepared for this five-star roller coaster ride, Vince Marrow is taking things in stride.

“You wanna mess with the big boys, you wanna recruit against the big boys, this is what happens,” Kentucky’s recruiting coordinator said on this morning’s Kentucky Sports Radio. “I feel good about what’s going to transpire.”

Even among high profile recruiting standards, few decisions have featured so many twists and turns. A brief timeline of today’s events:

  • 8:15 am — Kiyaunta Goodwin shares on Watch Stadium in Texas that he is still undecided between Kentucky and Michigan State.
  • 10 am — 247’s Steve Wiltfong shares that Goodwin will make his announcement at 3:30 pm ET on CBS Sports HQ.
  • 1:12 pm: Wiltfong says Goodwin’s camp is locking the doors to the facility to reach a decision, with an announcement time uncertain.
  • 1:20 pm: Goodwin shares he will announce his decision at Aspirations Gym on CBS Sports HQ at 5 pm.

What is one supposed to make of all of this? It’s impossible to read between the lines. Instead of trying to decipher it all, let’s go back to Marrow.

Of course, coaches cannot speak directly about players until they are officially signed with a team. However, Vince shared an analogy that describes this situation well.

“You take a player and he’s been a great college athlete,” Marrow said. “He’s been dating this girl for four years, for three years. Then it’s time for him to get drafted. The week before he gets drafted, in comes some pretty girl he doesn’t even know, but she comes in and tells him that she loves him. If he falls for that, then he’s a fool because she just sees what you really all about now. She doesn’t know who you are when you guys were eating Ramen noodles and doing all this other stuff.”

Kentucky has been recruiting Goodwin since he was a seventh grader. They have been through thick and thin. It’s what Goodwin cited as his primary reason for initially committing to Kentucky this spring. Michigan State’s Mel Tucker is the pretty girl sliding in at the eleventh hour to try to pull Goodwin away. Marrow remains confident that the pretty girl will not finish first.

“Since I’ve been here, relationships have always won over the BS. I’m going to count on that now.”
