Waka Flocka Flame, the rapper behind Kentucky Football’s unofficial anthem “Grove Street Party,” returned to Kroger Field today ahead of a concert tonight in downtown Lexington. He not only got to take in the 42-10 win over Tennessee Tech, but he also helped save some Kentucky fans trapped inside an elevator at the stadium.

A source close to KSR witnessed the rapper pulling open the doors of an elevator at Kroger Field with several fans stuck inside. Waka Flocka was on the sidelines during the first half of the game before moving to the upper deck in the second. That’s where he posted a video on his Instagram story, including a shot with the caption, “UK Football, man, I love y’all.”

It was Waka Flocka’s first trip back to Kroger Field since 2021, when he watched the Cats beat Florida for the first time in Lexington since 1986. He was so excited that he rushed the field and partied in the locker room afterward. Today’s outcome was a little more certain, so instead, he got on the jumbotron as “Grove Street Party” played. I hope nobody told him that Kentucky veered away from the tradition earlier this season.

Waka Flocka performs tonight at 8 p.m. at Manchester Music Hall in what is being billed as the afterparty to today’s game (tickets are still available). If you go, thank him for coming to the aid of some Kentucky fans in need.

Waka Flocka’s last trip to Kroger Field

Ever since Kentucky’s special teams famously swayed/danced to “Grove Street Party” during the South Carolina game in 2014, Waka Flocka has claimed the Cats as one of his teams. When he visited in 2021, he led the team out of the tunnel singing the song and told the SEC Network that he felt like he was at home.

“I felt like I grew up in Kentucky, the way the love was, the energy was, and how everybody gravitated with each other. It felt like we were in the NFL. I felt like that was the Super Bowl. It was amazing.”

Kentucky is 2-0 in games with Waka Flocka in attendance, and some fans were able to get out of an elevator with his help. He’s welcome back anytime.
