The last time we saw the Wildcats in action, the Kentucky defense got the best of the Kentucky offense. Wednesday morning defensive coordinator Brad White shared it has not always been lopsided as the two units go back and forth on a daily basis.

“It’s been good, it’s been bad, it’s been really ugly at times, but that’s okay,” said White. “That’s why you practice.”

While the offense installs a new playbook, the defense is ahead of schedule. With an experienced unit, Brad White is not slowing down. That comes at a cost for some of the newcomers.

“We’re throwing a lot at them right now, especially the young guys,” Brad White relayed. “The key is — we’ve talked about this in year’s past — they can’t hit the panic button right now. This is probably as much as we’ve put in defensively this quick. We’ve got some older guys on that first team so I don’t want to slow those guys down. But it becomes a lot on the younger guys. I want them to have this; feel what we do defensively and then we’ll start slowing down for them. I want to see who can retain.”

Brad White will learn how much his young players have retained when the Cats play in their first preseason scrimmage at Kroger Field. The most demanding test to date, Kentucky’s defensive coordinator wants to see how his players respond, particularly in the secondary.

“Saturday when we get into the first scrimmage, that’s going to be the first real big test. Now it’s, can you compete when you’re tired? Live action, balls are flying deep and if it gets caught, can you respond?”
