Kenny Brooks wasn’t pleased with Kentucky’s 75-59 win over Morehead State. For him, there weren’t really any positive takeaways — at least fresh out of the game while he’s thinking about where the team needs to improve.

He, alongside Jordan Obi, spoke to the media following the game.

“It’s obviously good to get one under your belt from a standpoint of just having film to figure out what you could do to get better,” Brooks said in his opening statement. “But I want to give credit to Morehead State — thought they did a really good job of keeping us on our toes, never really allowing us to push the lead out. And they made us think about some things. They did a good job. They shot the basketball well, but I thought Ashton [Feldhaus] did a really good job with that group. It was kind of hard in preparation — they had 11 new players. We were trying to scrounge to get film on all of them, but we need to get better and understanding how to make adjustments in game in order for us to be successful.”

Brooks thought that the communication on both sides of the ball wasn’t up to standard. That’s something that they’ve really worked on all offseason, and clearly, that’s something that is still a weakness for this group.

“We got a lot of work to do,” Brooks added. “I was not pleased with the way that we came out, played. I thought we were lackluster in our effort. And not because of lack of wanting, I just thought we stood around, and we watched each other a lot, so our communication was extremely poor, and we have to get better in that aspect.”

Regardless, Kentucky is 1-0, and that’s all you can ask for right now. At least they now have some tape to evaluate.

“We have film, and we continue to move forward,” Brooks said as he rounded out his opening statement. “We’ve got a quick turnaround playing Monmouth on Thursday, but it’s more about ourselves and just trying to get us on the same page, and we weren’t that tonight.”
