Maxwell Hairston called his shot going into the second game of his young NFL career.

“Just the opportunity to pick off Patrick Mahomes, that’s all I’m looking forward to,” he said ahead of Buffalo’s matchup vs. Kansas City. “Just going out there and not making it bigger than what it is, going out there and playing ball.”

Fast forward to Sunday afternoon, the Bills needing one final stop to send the Chiefs home with a loss late in the fourth quarter. Who comes up big? You guessed it, the former Kentucky Wildcat, who recorded his first interception on a deep ball from Mahomes on 3rd and 10 with 4:18 to go.

It was a jump ball to Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy from their own 11 down to the Buffalo 34, brought in by the 2025 first-round draft pick out of UK.

Hairston had already received rave reviews for his coverage on Worthy earlier in the game, going stride for stride with the speedy wideout — again, in just his second career game as a pro.

Already proving he was worthy of that high selection back in the spring as the third cornerback off the board, holding the KC standout to just 12 total yards.

Hairston missed the first six games of the season with a right LCL sprain suffered during training camp back in July. He was placed on injured reserve to open the year and finally made his debut in a 40-9 win over the Carolina Panthers, playing 27 snaps with 12 coming on pass plays with the former Wildcat in coverage. The rookie was not targeted once, but recorded one tackle — blowing up a screen for a minimal gain — to finish as the highest-graded defensive back on the Bills and the fourth-highest defensive player overall.

“It was so much fun. It had to be, like, one of the funnest moments of my life,” Hairston said following his debut. “I had so much fun out there. Like, I felt free.”

He happened to top that performance a week later — and called his shot on a pick on Patrick Mahomes along the way.

Way to go, Mad Max.
