Wofford reportedly fires HC Dwight Perry after 2025 NCAA Tournament run

Dwight Perry, who played at Kentucky from 2006-09, has reportedly been let go as the head coach of Wofford men’s basketball.
The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman was first to report the news Friday afternoon, a rather shocking development for Perry, who led Wofford to the 2025 NCAA Tournament. It’s even more shocking when we consider that the 2025-26 college basketball season is less than two months out from opening week. Perry spent the last three seasons as head coach of the Terriers, posting an overall record of 48-43 (28-26; Southern Conference) during his tenure.
Perry, who is the cousin of another former Kentucky player, Bobby Perry, appeared in just 19 games for the Wildcats during his college days. He was a three-year walk-on, playing one season under Tubby Smith and two more under Billy Gillispie. Perry made his return to Lexington back in March when Wofford lost to Tennessee in Rupp Arena during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

But now, Perry suddenly finds himself out of a job.
The Wofford men’s basketball program isn’t exactly new to head coaching drama. The team’s previous guiding voice, Jay McAuley, was Wofford’s head coach from 2019 to 2022. However, he took a leave of absence early in the 2022-23 season and ultimately resigned in December 2022. That opened up the door for Perry to step in as interim head coach during the middle of the season. The former Wildcat was later named the Terriers’ full-time head coach in March 2023.
The timing of all this is certainly noteworthy. Perry won just 17 and 19 games, respectively, in his first full seasons as head coach, which isn’t spectacular by any means. Wofford finished 10-8 in conference games last season and made the NCAA Tournament thanks to a terrific three-game run in the SoCon Tournament. But it was still the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2019.
Don’t be surprised if this isn’t the last we hear of this story.
