Collins hosted Woodford County (No. 10 in KSR’s rankings) for a high-scoring matchup in Friday night’s Kroger KSR Game of the Week. The Yellow Jackets put up a staggering 41 points on the road in a dominating offensive performance from start to finish. Collins (6-2) kept the game within reach, even tying it up at 28, but it wasn’t enough as Woodford Co. (8-0) pulled away for a 41-28 victory in the Class 5A, District 7 matchup.

Woodford County’s Offense Dominates

Sophomore Andrew Nason led Woodford in every way possible. We discussed the junior extensively in the game preview, and he did not disappoint. Coach Dennis Johnson was able to utilize all the talent on the Yellow Jacket roster by running a variation of the wing concept (I definitely knew what this was; Freddie didn’t have to teach me). Nason made most of his plays running a triple option to perfection, the sign of a smart quarterback.

Along with Nason, senior Aden Nelson had a great game on both sides of the ball. Stacy Preston had just about whatever he wanted from the backfield, and Makhi Smith even had a few catches. Everything was clicking for the Jackets, proving their offense is one of the most explosive in the state. Woodford County sent a message to the rest of 5A; if you want to play with us, you better bring some points.

Woodford County coach and former Kentucky Wildcat Dennis Johnson said it best when speaking about the weapons, “We got a lot of talented guys, we have a lot of pieces. We got some weapons, we gotta keep it together, stay healthy, and try to make a run”

Don’t overlook the defense, though. They had trouble containing Collins QB Kenyon Goodin (we’ll get to him later) in the first half. Collins got Goodin out of the pocket for big yards and big plays. The Titans scored 14 points at the half and another 14 at the start of the fourth. The Yellow Jacket defense finally put a stop to the Titans, holding them scoreless in the final eight minutes to secure the win.

Makhi Smith spoke on the intensity of the game.

“We had to fight through adversity. We knew it was going to be a good game. They always give us their best. We knew we had to fight, so that’s what we did.”

Mr. Football Candidate Impresses

Kenyon Goodin, folks, remember the name. The Collins quarterback was Mr. Do-It-All on Friday night. The wide receiver-turned-quarterback made just about every play on offense for the Titans. The first half alone had numerous plays where Goodin rushed for over 20 yards. After that, whenever a big play was needed, there was only one guy the Titans had to look to. He rushed for two touchdowns (took THIS HIT) and also threw for two more.

If that’s not enough for you, Goodin also snagged two interceptions on DEFENSE. Unfortunately, the senior is categorized as a late bloomer, so the likes of Kentucky and Louisville are a bit late to the party. It’s yet to be seen if the Cats or Cards will offer him, but I wouldn’t bet against it.

Woodford County’s Coach Johnson said, “They have a Mr. Football candidate, and he showed it all game. He’s tough to stop. We tried to throw a lot of things at him.” High praise from a great coach and former NFL player only bodes well for Goodin and the quarterback’s campaign for Mr. Football.

Woodford County will try to continue their undefeated campaign next week against East Jessamine. Collins travels to the other side of the county for a potential bounce back game against West Jessamine.
