How it Happened: LSU wins program's 8th College World Series
On Sunday, LSU Baseball captured the program’s eighth National Championship with a 5-3 win over Coastal Carolina in Game 2 of the CWS.
With the Tigers winning the 2025 College World Series crown, it’s the second time in three seasons LSU head coach Jay Johnson and his program have taken the trophy from Omaha and brought it home Baton Rouge.
Here’s how the Tigers knocked off Coastal Carolina in Game 2 of the CWS Finals on Sunday.
Chaos ensues as umpires toss two Coastal Carolina coaches
06/22/2025 02:11:06 PMLSU’s Steven Milam picked up where he left off vs. Coastal Carolina with a hit to start the first inning, but Coastal Carolina pitcher Jacob Morrison struck out two batters and got a ground out to avoid any early damage that could have been delivered by the top of LSU’s order. In the bottom of the first inning, LSU pitcher Anthony Eyanson got a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to keep the score at 0-0. But, that wasn’t the storyline. Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected in the first inning, and during discussion with the umpires, first base coach Matt Schilling – who Schnall called the team’s most important coach – was also ejected. With eight innings remaining in Game 2 of the CWS Finals, Coastal Carolina will be without the program’s head coach and top assistant.

06/22/2025 02:27:12 PMAfter being ejected in the first inning, the ESPN commentators for Game 2 of the CWS confirmed the NCAA’s ruling that Kevin Schnall will miss the rest of Sunday’s game and the CWS Finals Game 3 on Monday – if the game is necessary. A win for LSU on Sunday would give the Tigers the program’s 8th CWS title, while a Coastal Carolina win would force a Game 3 on Monday to decide the 2025 CWS winner.
LSU ties it up at 1-1 in the 3rd inning
06/22/2025 02:43:58 PMLSU second baseman Daniel Dickinson led the inning off with a single, and Michael Braswell put Dickinson in scoring position at second base with a perfect bunt down the first base line. After Derek Curiel flied out, Ethan Frey doubled to the gap in left field, which scored Dickinson from second to give LSU the team’s first run of the game to tie it up at 1-1.
The Tigers grab the lead, run off Coastal’s ace on 63 pitches
06/22/2025 03:07:43 PMLSU used the third inning to tie the game at 1-1 and the 4th inning to open up the biggest lead of the CWS Finals. Chris Stanfield’s single to left field scored two LSU runners, and Derek Curiel’s single up the middle scored two more. With a 5-1 lead, the Tigers sent Coastal Carolina ace pitcher Jacob Morrison – who entered the game 12-0 on the year – to the dugout after being pulled before the end of the fourth inning. Morrison finished his CWS Finals appearance with only 63 pitches after being tagged by LSU’s hitters for five earned runs on six hits with just two strikeouts.

5th, 6th innings combine for just two hits and zero runs
06/22/2025 03:53:50 PMThe Tigers went down on three batters in the fifth and four batters in the sixth, while Coastal Carolina managed a hit in each inning, but nothing more. For LSU starter Anthony Eyanson, the pitch count headed into the 7th inning went up to 92 pitches thrown with nine strikeouts and one earned run (solo home run) on six hits.
Eyanson exits for LSU, Shores ends the inning quickly
06/22/2025 04:11:50 PMLSU had runners on the corners in the top of the seventh inning, but a strikeout ended the threat of extending the 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Coastal Carolina came up with the second home run of the day on Eyanson, this time a two-run home run that cut LSU’s lead to 5-3. Eyanson exited the game after throwing 99 pitches and striking out nine batters while giving up three runs on seven hits. With the 5-3 lead, LSU turned to reliever Chase Shores, who retired the first batter he faced on just one pitch before using multiple 100-plus mile an hour pitches to get a strikeout for the third out of the inning. Even with Coastal’s two runs, the Tigers are now six outs away from the College World Series title.

With a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning, LSU stuck with Shores on the mound, a decision that paid off when he struck out the first three batters he faced before getting an infield ground ball for the final out of the eighth.

06/22/2025 04:39:20 PMCoastal Carolina got the lead-off hitter on base, but LSU head coach Jay Johnson stuck with Shores on the mound, who struck out the next batter for the first out of the bottom of the ninth inning and a 5-3 lead for the Tigers. Then came a grounder to Milam that was turned into a double-play to end the game. And with the double-play ball, LSU is officially the 2025 College World Series Champions.
