LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry was in Mississippi waiting to greet Lane Kiffin, the Tigers’ new head coach, on Sunday night. the two flew to Baton Rouge where they were greeted by a host of fans chanting and screaming in excitement. After a busy past few days, Kiffin is officially an LSU Tiger and is excited to be in Louisiana to lead the program.

Kiffin spoke with ESPN about the decision and everything that went into his decision to accept the job at LSU.

“It was just really difficult,” Kiffin said. “This has been a really special place. Six years here. I know that there’s a lot of feelings and emotions right now. I hope when they settle down that there’s an appreciation for what we were able to do here and having the best run that’s ever been done in the history of the school and brought some exciting times. So I’m so appreciative to the people of Oxford and the relationships that I developed here.

And you know, when I spoke at my dad’s funeral—he moved 17 times—and I realized, when I got all the letters, calls, people showed up from all those different spots, NC State, all the different spots he coached, and they said he was able to impact them and how much that meant to them. And so, I’ve really strived since that day to really try to impact people and help people through life through my journey. So, just prayed a lot and made a family decision and, you know, hopefully get a chance to go impact a whole new set of people.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Kiffin as the next head coach of the LSU Football program,” LSU Director of Athletics Verge Ausberry said. “We shared when we began this search that LSU would secure the best coach in the country and Lane Kiffin is just that. Lane is a proven winner who has thrived in an era of college athletics that requires coaches to adapt and innovate. His passion, creativity and authenticity make him the ideal leader to guide LSU into the future and consistently position us among the sport’s elite.

“I want to welcome Lane and his family to Baton Rouge, and I’d like to thank our search committee, as well as our university and state leadership, for their critical support and counsel throughout this process.”

Kiffin is set to take the podium for his first LSU press conference on Monday, sources tell the Bengal Tiger staff.

Kiffin, who had been the top target for the LSU search committee since Kelly was fired in late-October, has agreed to terms to become the next head coach of the Tigers, multiple sources tell On3 and The Bengal Tiger’s Shea Dixon.
