Lane Kiffin writes letter finalizing move to LSU, thanking Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin has made the move official, announcing his decision to leave Ole Miss and accept the position as LSU’s next head coach on X on Sunday afternoon.
In doing so, he leaves a program in the College Football Playoffs and begins a new era as the head coach for LSU, looking to bring one of the best programs in the country back to the top as consistent title contenders. Kiffin thanked Ole Miss for his time there and despite disputes with athletic director Keith Carter, he wished them the best in the playoffs. Here is everything he wrote.
“After a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU.
I was hoping to complete a historic six season run with this year’s team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team’s incredible success and their commitment to finish strong, and investing everything into a playoff run with guardrails in place to protect the program in any areas of concern. My request to do so was denied by Keith Carter despite the team also asking him to allow me to keep coaching them so they could better maintain their high level of performance. Unfortunately, that means Friday’s Egg Bowl was my last game coaching the Rebels.
While I am looking forward to a new start with a unique opportunity at LSU, I will forever cherish the incredible six years I spent at Ole Miss and will be rooting hard for the team to complete their mission and bring a championship to Oxford.”

LSU will face Ole Miss every season as part of the new SEC scheduling format as permanent rivals and both sides will be under new leadership. Pete Golding has been promoted to the new head coach for the Rebels in the wake of Kiffin leaving and it is still unclear as to who all from that staff is coming to Baton Rouge and who is staying in Oxford. Regardless, LSU has its guy.
After a whirlwind month of news and headlines, both good and bad, LSU has landed Lane Kiffin and will be one of the most talked about teams in college football once again. It has been just over a month since Brian Kelly was fired and now it all seems worth it as Kiffin is now in charge.
The 50-year old coaching veteran understands what it means to leave a place and have to start over, but after everything he’s been through, he’s ready to embrace this new opportunity.
