LSU has made another significant splash in the transfer portal this week, this time picking up Zac Cowan, Wofford’s ace pitcher this season.

Cowan ended his sophomore year with a 10-2 record, a 3.35 ERA, 124 strikeouts, and 29 walks in 110 innings and was selected to the All-SoCon First-Team. The 5-foot-11 South Carolina native was one of the top players in the entire conference and pitched on two separate occasions in the SoCon Tournament to help lift Wofford to a championship and an NCAA tournament berth.

Despite being in the same regional and playing twice, LSU did not get to face Cowan in Chapel Hill. Instead, Cowan was used in the elimination game against Long Island, where he pitched six innings with six strikeouts, one walk, seven hits allowed, and zero runs, securing the Terriers’ win, and likely interest from LSU once he entered the portal.

With LSU’s two starting pitchers headed to the MLB Draft in a few weeks, Johnson has a tall task to get top-end arms from the portal once again and Cowan certainly qualifies as that after the season he just had.

Johnson talked about rebuilding LSU’s roster on Tuesday and has put his plan into action this week.

“When looking at the players that have committed to returning in 2025 you have some good pieces and great character,” Johnson said. “I’m comfortable with them as a foundation. Then, we have to go get some players. We had 13 players drafted last year and we’ll have between 5 and 11 players drafted this year and that’s a lot of turnover the last two years. That’s what we’re also here to do –  develop guys for professional baseball. That’s led to a hustle of what we need to do to put our 2025 roster where it needs to be. It will look different by design and I’m very excited about that. We’ve had some good interactions from on campus visits and being on the road the past couple of days and we’ll continue that up to the first day of school.”
