LSU Football falls out of the AP Top 25, once again

With back-to-back losses to Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, LSU Football has fallen out of the AP Top 25.
The Tigers debuted as the No. 9 team in the preseason Top 25, then jumped to No. 3 following a Week 1 win over a Top 5 program in Clemson.
Since the Week 1 road win, LSU head coach Brian Kelly‘s team has four wins and three losses and are 2-3 in Southeastern Conference play.
LSU is not ranked in the AP Top 25 polls for the first time mid-November 2024 when the Tigers were ranked No. 21 before falling out of the rankings following a 27-16 loss at Florida. LSU won the final two regular season games over Vanderbilt and Oklahoma before securing a victory in the Texas Bowl over Baylor, but the Tigers didn’t climb back into the Top 25.
With chants calling out for Kelly to be fired on Saturday night in Death Valley, the fourth-year head coach opened up on the reality the Tigers will fall short of preseason goals of making the College Football Playoffs with a 10-win regular season out of reach before the month of November arrives.
“This is an extremely disappointing night,” Kelly said. “Any fan base would be upset. The responsibility falls on me. LSU has a proud tradition and a proud team. They prepared their tails off and expected to win. It showed in the first half and not in the second. My focus has to be inside-out, not outside-in. The noise is deserved, but I have to fix what’s inside our program so this doesn’t happen again.”

With back-to-back SEC losses hovering over the Tigers entering the team’s second bye week, Kelly – who has four years remaining on a contract that carries a buyout of nearly $60 million – said the search for answers begins with the head coach.
“I have to evaluate everything from the top down, and make the decisions that let this team play at a higher level,” Kelly said. “I’ve got to come up with those solutions.
“I’ve been doing this 35 years. It’s my responsibility to get it turned around. If things aren’t going well, the head coach has to be agile, make changes, and figure out how to get the team playing better.”
