LSU guard Angelica Velez enters NCAA transfer portal
The Tigers have their second transfer portal departure of the offseason, this time in Angelica Velez, a freshman point guard from the Bronx, New York, according to multiple reports.
As a former four-star prospect, Velez played at The Webb School with Aalyah Del Rosario and committed to LSU along her long-time teammate.
On the year, she played in 23 games and logged 111 minutes, scoring 27 points on 9-of-27 shooting and 1-of-2 from 3-point range with 13 assists to 18 turnovers. At 5-foot-7, Velez continued to work on her game on a star-studded roster at LSU.
“I’ve learned so much from my teammates,” Velez said before the season. “Their work ethic is insane. I love basketball, so I’ve always been the type of player that feels like I work hard, but whenever I’m in the gym , they’re there. Whenever I come, they know how to work. Something I learned from them is to go the extra mile. If we’re running, Flau’jae says go to the wall or do an extra rep. She has a different type of mindset and it’s a blessing to learn from her.”

Now Velez hopes to take what she learned at LSU onto her next journey of her career after watching and getting coached by a Hall of Fame coach.
“The biggest development for me has been shooting,” Velez said before the year. “I’ve worked on my jump shot a lot so it can be more consistent, but I feel like taking on the role of a Kim Mulkey point guard. She demands a lot from the point guards and I have to know how to lead the team, know everyone’s position and it’s a lot. I’m excited for it and I take on the challenge every day.”
Now, LSU is firmly in the market for a point guard after losing Hailey Van Lith and Velez in the span of a week. Where will the Tigers turn this offseason? Stay tuned to the Bengal Tiger for the latest women’s basketball news.
