On the first day coaches were allowed to visit 2027 prospects, LSU was the first team to meet with Marcus Spears Jr. The No. 6 player in the country per Rivals’ Industry Rankings, Spears has been on LSU’s board for years, but now the recruiting process has officially begun and the Tigers’ staff is looking to be at the forefront early on.

LSU assistant coach David Patrick went to see Spears, who’s father was a star defensive lineman on LSU’s National title team in 2003 and an All-American in 2004 out of Baton Rouge. Spears Sr.’s daughter is playing volleyball at Texas, but now he has a son ready to enter the recruiting process in basketball as one of the top players in the country.

Spears was offered by LSU back in 2024 and went on an unofficial visit in 2024 as well. Here is what he said late in 2024

“LSU is a great place. My parents went there. They have a new coaching staff there and they have great facilities. I like Louisiana, for real. There is nothing really like Baton Rouge to me. They have a great campus and a good coach.”

Early on, LSU is in the mix with SMU, Texas A&M, Texas, Kentucky, and other top teams all staying in contact. Spears is currently playing at Dynamic Prep, one of the top programs in Texas and a program that faces high-level competition throughout the year. Spears is a 6-foot-7 wing/forward with an array of skills early in his career.

“I’m a two-way player, I would say,” Spears told On3. “Mostly on defense right now, but my offensive game is starting to come along. I’m getting my shot right and getting downhill. I’m able to read the defense better now. Instead of thinking of a move and doing it, I’m reacting to what the defense is giving me and doing a move. I watch a lot of Jayson Tatum. I like how he is an all-around player, he plays defense and can score.”

Spears was named to the Team USA U16 AmeriCup team over the summer, scoring 15 points in the semi-final game against Puerto Rico and 14 in the championship game against Canada. This, plus a strong AAU season on the Nike EYBL circuit raised his stock even more, pushing him inside the top 10.

Rivals’ Jamie Shaw on Marcus Spears Jr.

Marcus Spears Jr. has great length with a good frame and slashing mentality. He always seemed to be around the ball, making a play on it whether he was playing defense, rebounding, or slashing toward the rim. Spears showed easy athleticism, which was very fluid and explosive. He also finished well around the basket, getting downhill with a purpose. Spears is the son of former NFL/LSU defensive lineman Marcus Spears. He has natural instincts.” – Shaw on 8/25/24
