On the Pod: What makes Lane Kiffin a good offensive play caller?
***
Brune: I like their formations. I like their, obviously, his dedication to it as well. Like he does not waver off running the ball because he needs to do it. I think in order to be successful in college football, you have to understand that even a short game is a massive win on first and second downs. Like you just have to stay ahead of the change, and I think he understands that very well.
Bryce: I just think he’s so good schematically. He understands his personnel grouping and he matches it up well. He identifies mismatches. He understands tendencies. I think that’s why we’re all excited, and we’d like to see him be the head coach at LSU because you finally have a guy that understands those things, and he’s obsessed over it. And it just would be, I know that’s getting a little further along in the question, but I just think he’s so much more effective because he’s so good at what he does. And he understands matching his skill set to what works for them. Do we need to be more zone-schemed? What do we need to do this here? What do we need to do here? Can we take advantage of the left side of the defensive line? And he attacks it. And one thing, Brune, and he’s not shy about this. He’s pretty brash. He will tell you what he’s going to do and do it. I think that’s one thing. He’ll identify we know we’re not good at this. We’re going to continue to do this and dare you to stop it.
