Talking about the offense’s growth

Shea Dixon: “I’m at fault for this, comparing this offense to last year’s and the standards or expectations of where I think they can go. It’s just because they have the same quarterback and largely the same deficiencies with the O-line and getting a consistent run game.

Or do I just say, okay, if they can be as good as they can be, maybe this is the level they’ll perform to? Because again, you don’t fumble at the one-yard line, you don’t kick a field goal inside the three, and you don’t throw a pick inside the ten — this game looks a lot different than 20-10. People jumped on me for saying that I felt better about where this team was going because of the offense after this game than I did after Ole Miss, as if that were crazy to say.

The defense, I feel the same about every week. Special teams too. But the offense — I felt better after this one going into the back half of the year than I did before the bye week, for sure.”

Matthew Brune: “At this point, two weeks ago, there were very real questions coming off a loss — about Garrett Nussmeier’s status and everything like that.

Now, at least, I feel like they’re in a better position in terms of knowing what they have, knowing what they can do, and knowing what they have to work around moving forward. That’s not to say they’re not going to struggle — they still have some very good defenses on the schedule — but this was at least a good glimpse for us to say, “All right, I think we can now lock in what this offense looks like with Garrett Nussmeier throwing the ball like that.”

That was the biggest question to me — is he ever going to throw the ball like that again? And he did. He threw the ball at least well enough. We’ll talk about the mistakes, we’ll talk about everything like that, but he at least threw it with some velocity for once. That was a positive.”
