On the pod: The overall outlook of LSU‘s program right now

Shea Dixon: “You spent more money than anyone outside of maybe Texas Tech, who’s been a top-10 team and has played better football than LSU. I know they lost, but they had a backup quarterback. You brought in a huge portal class, you retained well, and you brought back Garrett Nussmeier.

And yet a lot of the same glaring issues from last year on offense are still there. They can’t run the football. They don’t block well. Nussmeier is not having the year he had a season ago. You revamped the receiver room and production is still down. What was that graphic—how many drops? A billion, I guess. I’m having a tough time seeing how they escape unscathed these next two weeks, let alone the next five games—which in theory, you would need to win all five of to be guaranteed a College Football Playoff spot. And I don’t even feel like playing the “Does 9–3 get you in?” game. No. You don’t deserve to be in at 9–3. Not with the product we’ve seen.

Matthew Brune: “I think a lot of the warranted pessimism right now, even with LSU at 5–2 and ranked No. 20, is that the only two good teams you’ve played, you’ve looked outclassed. Both games were on the road, and you still have A&M, Alabama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma left. It’s hard to imagine this team doing a complete 180. Even if you say, “OK, they beat A&M, maybe they lose to Bama, then beat Arkansas and Oklahoma,” it’s just hard to believe right now—and I think that’s the big thing for LSU fans.

Throughout Brian Kelly’s tenure, there was always something you could point to—if this goes right, if that matchup works, if this guy steps up. But this is about as bleak of an outlook as we’ve seen under Brian Kelly. And I think it’s because the same frustrating issues keep holding the team back.”
