The first inning of Game 2 between LSU and Coastal Carolina had all the intensity of a championship bout — and it didn’t take long for emotions to boil over.

In a must-win elimination game for the Chanticleers, head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected in the bottom of the first inning after disputing a strike call. Schnall stepped out of the dugout to voice his frustration. It appeared that Schnall said: “You missed three pitches.”

When he ignored the umpire’s warning to step back, he was tossed from the game. That set off a fiery confrontation as Schnall stormed toward the umpire, and in the ensuing chaos, another official trying to intervene was knocked to the ground.

Moments later, first base coach Matt Schilling — whom Schnall previously called “the most important coach” on his staff — was also ejected after voicing his displeasure over Schnall’s removal. Coastal Carolina was suddenly without two of its top leaders just minutes into a win-or-go-home scenario.

ESPN’s broadcast team didn’t hold back in questioning the umpires’ decisions.

“That’s an aggressive ejection,” said play-by-play announcer Karl Ravech. “Schnall and the first base coach Schilling have both been ejected from this College World Series game in the bottom of the first inning. And Schnall has emphasized to us the most important coach that he has is Schilling at first base.”

According to ESPN, NCAA officials said both Schnall and Schilling have received two-game suspensions for prolonged arguing, meaning neither would be in the dugout if Coastal Carolina beats LSU Sunday to force a Game 3 Monday. If needed, Game 3 would be at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN.

In the bottom of the second inning, Coastal Carolina Dean Mihos responded to the ejections with a crushed a ball over the left-field fence to give the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead. LSU immediately responded in the third to tie the game 1-1.
