Miami beat South Carolina and Florida to land four-star top-150 receiver Somourian Wingo Thursday afternoon, the 6-foot-3, 180-pound receiver announced at his high school ceremony.

“I’ll be taking my talents to the University of Miami!” Wingo said as he plucked a Cane cap off the table in front of him.

The No. 141 overall prospect and No. 20 receiver in the Rivals Industry Ranking becomes Miami’s 21st commit in the cycle and third receiver commit joining Rivals300 four-star receivers Tyran Evans and Vance Spafford in Miami’s No. 13-ranked recruiting class. The Hurricanes now have 12 commits in the Rivals300 and 13 Rivals300 four-star recruits. He also becomes the first player to commit to Miami since the Canes flipped four-star top-150 cornerback Brody Jennings from Michigan July 5.

Miami has now landed seven four-star recruits in the last two months.

Wingo took an official visit to Miami May 30 before an official visit to Florida June 6 and South Carolina June 20. Wingo previously took a multi-day unofficial visit to Miami during his spring break in March before returning to campus for the Hurricanes’ spring game in April and receiving an in-school visit from Miami’s staff later that month. The Canes continued communicating with Wingo into the month of June before ultimately winning him over this week.

“Really just because the people there, everybody there showed me mad love from the beginning to the end,” Wingo told CaneSport. “They never stopped recruiting me and they always showed me I was a top priority for them. …They just constantly talked to me on an everyday basis, every time I visited, just showing me that I’m a top priority, keeping me around the players so I can see what it’s like with them.”

Wingo said his multi-day visit to Coral Gables over spring break played a significant role in spurring his interest in the Hurricanes, although Florida and South Carolina remained heavily involved. He said Miami’s staff erupted when he informed them he was joining the Hurricanes.

“(There was) obviously a lot of excitement,” Wingo said. “It was definitely a joyful moment for all of us. It was just excitement really.”

Wingo said his family was both enthused and relieved when he committed because of how exhausting the recruiting process can be. But he doesn’t doubt he made the right decision.

“It feels great,” Wingo said. “I feel comfortable. I feel like I made the right choice. I’m just ready to finish my senior season and then put the work in my freshman year.”

CaneSport’s Take

Miami definitely needed a win on the recruiting trail after the Hurricanes missed on several top blue-chip defensive linemen earlier in the month and with Derrek Cooper likely headed to Texas or Georgia, at least initially. Landing Wingo is definitely a significant win considering it previously looked like he was likely off to Florida earlier this summer.
