CaneSport Message Board Mania: Miami Hurricanes Fans Debate NIL Millions Needed to Keep Reuben Bain at UM Another Year

In today’s CaneSport Message Board Mania segment, we celebrate Miami’s 4-0 start. Because that 4-0 start is very much based on winning in NIL and the transfer portal, with money in place for the program to be competitive with anyone out there and six key pieces on offense coming from the portal plus six more on defense. And a kicker who’s, pun intended, kicking butt.

So with that in mind, just a few year ago we’d never have seen this message board thread started by user LEE1106 (no relation to LEE1105), right? “Would it be worth it to offer Reuben Bain $3 million to stay his senior year with an elite insurance policy?

The answer, by the way, is yes, it would certainly be worth it.

But it probably will cost WAY more than that to keep him in college vs. getting a massive NFL signing bonus as a very high pick plus starting the ticker on what could be a massive second contract payday in the NFL. $3 million won’t come close to offsetting any of that.

The question does remain, though, if a program gets unlimited money from – hypothetically, of course – a Nike owner who is a booster, or an oil baron who is a booster – are there NCAA rules in place to prevent that program from essentially putting together an All-Star team of college players?

It seems not, at least not the way things are structured now.

But today isn’t about pontification. It’s about you, the fan, and your opinions on if Miami should try to pony up a massive amount of money to keep a player like Bain next year vs. his going pro early.

As you read this, you’re probably thinking `Hell, yeah, I’m sure all the Miami fans were posting to keep him at UM at all costs.”

Well, as it turns out, Miami fans (well, at least the ones on our message boards), are level-headed, nice people.

A sample:

OpaLockaCane: No, let Bain start his career.

Theu4life: He will be a top 5 pick. You can’t chance that.

newnangacane: Anybody with first round talent should leave. They need to get to their second contract as soon as possible.

CANESCANESCANESCANES: No, when you’re the most dominant in the sport, it’s time to go to the next level.

EastRob: Let’s appreciate him while he’s here.

The final word goes to honeyiv, but only because he posted before his usual 2 a.m. timeframe.

“HE…IS…GONE,” IV writes.

Now, the correctly phrased question on the original thread probably should have been, “If Miami had unlimited money, how much do you think it would cost to keep Bain another year?”

But, so far at least, nobody has started that thread.

Stay tuned.
