Our newest message board mania thread begins with a simple “My observations.”

It could have been about bird watching, hotel reviews or even perhaps some insightful political commentary. But no, for some reason thread starter KJMahan (as a side note, we assume this is a nom de guerre since you never want these message board wackos to know your real name – sincerely, Matthieu Showdill) made it about Miami’s easy win against Notre Dame.

And we say “easy win” because based on what “KJ” (we’ll refer to him by his fake first name to maintain his personal security) posted, basically the entire Miami team dominated:

* Stopping the run – ND had 93 total yards on the ground against the best running backs and OL we see this year
* Offensive & defensive lines beat theirs, esp OL
* Our young WR’s look good. A lot of receivers were open against the best secondary we face. Plus they were holding us all night
* We tackled pretty well for a first game
* Our secondary did well against their WR’s who only had 98 yards receiving as a group
* We kept their LB’s out of the game completely
* Deep and talented RB room
* DT’s Blay & Moten stood out
* Turnover margin +2
* So many 2nd strings guys got meaningful reps and played well
* Maybe we have a kicker!

Okay, just like his fake name, the above is perhaps a bit of fake news. Because he did also post:

Opportunities
* Their TE was open all night
* The dang QB runs
* Some miscommunication picking up the blitz
* Some miscommunication on the back end
* Didn’t need to come down to the last drive. Could have won comfortably
* Refs tried desperately to give the game to ND
* Need our TE position more involved

He summed up with “We should have won by 13pts, but what a great team win!! Bodes well for the rest of the season since ND is the most talented overall team we face. It’s great to be a Miami Hurricane.”

If you assume nobody responded to his long initial post, you’d be correct. Correct, that is, if you blocked the other 35+ posters that for some reason felt the need to share their own thoughts.

Not that you asked, but here are my rebuttals/agreements with “KJ”: “DL stopped the run” – I’d agree with the caveat I want to see Corey Hetherman scheme up stopping the QB draw since a slow as molasses dude ran for a bunch of yards. Agree we won the trenches, but I’d say our secondary wasn’t really tested with a quick passing game and little attacking downfield given some pretty poor accuracy from their QB on several throws. CJ Carr was, as my son put it, “ass.” It’s a talented Miami RB room for sure and agree “maybe” we have a kicker. I have to see more to believe that, though. As for the negatives I would not say their TE was open all night but there needs to be better scheming for sure and the “miscommunication” has to be gauged in terms of what we saw last year. Compared to that this game had perfect communication. The refs are always bad, they made some questionable calls for sure. And 100 percent need to get our TEs involved in the passing game, that’s going to be a big X factor moving forward.

With that said … it’s time for some of our favorite responses to “KJ”:

One dandy came from Islamorada Cane: “Alabama is garbage.”

No, we’re not giving context, you have to sign up to be a CaneSport member for that. So sorry. You can sign up either here or by sending Gary Ferman whatever money you find in your couch.

Castillo147 posts “The dang QB runs, aka Castellanos gonna have a field day vs us up in tally.” We don’t know how the first 146 Castillo’s feel about that, but personally I think Hetherman will scheme for that and wasn’t worried about a slow Carr (see what I did there?).

KLCane posts “They were the #6 team in the country and a perennial playoff team. This win was legit.” To that I’d say a tentative yes, but their offense did not look good so we’ll hold off on declaring the Canes’ defense a top one until we see a little more. Miami’s offense is for sure good, though – that defense was 100 percent legit.

Sastrasberg adds “You can’t ignore the hyper conservative play calling late in the second half. That kind of thing is gonna cost them a game if they keep doing it in every situation where they’re up by 14 points.”

Yeah, we’re going to ignore that one and move on to the next response.

Oh, and that next response addresses Mr. Berg.

That also will be the final word on this rapidly aging column.

“I think you have to remember that this is just the first game with a lot of new faces on both sides of the ball against a good opponent,” allied2651 says. “As the season progresses, I think Mario and Dawson will be less conservative.”
