Elite 2026 SF Alex Constanza Talks Jai Lucas, Miami’s Pursuit, and What He’s Looking For

Since he was an eighth grader competing at the varsity level at Mater Academy Charter (Fla.), small forward Alex Constanza has been considered one of the top basketball prospects in the 2026 class, a target for the Miami Hurricanes and many others.
A South Florida native, Miami offered Constanza under the previous coaching regime last summer, and this pursuit has continued with Jai Lucas and the Hurricanes’ new staff.
Constanza told CaneSport that he hears from Miami’s coaches every week. They even came to visit him for a practice this past high school season while at Westminster Academy (Fla.). From conversations with Lucas, Constanza has gotten a feel for the direction that the head coach wants to enter with Miami.
“He’s just trying to bring back the winning spirit,” Constanza said.
Along with Miami, Illinois, and Georgetown, Florida and Florida State are the schools that Constanza has heard from the most as of late. He took an official visit to Georgetown in June; this was the only official visit he’s taken yet. He’s still in the process of scheduling other official visits.
Constanza, who’s ranked by Rivals as the No. 16 player in his class, doesn’t know exactly when he’s going to commit yet, but he has an idea of what factors he will consider when making that ultimate decision.

“Just having conversations with my family to figure out what’s the best fit, play style, coach-wise, which school I’ll go to,” Constanza said.
The 6-foot-8, 205-pound prospect averaged an impressive 29.4 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals per game in his junior season. He also shot 61% from the field, 52% from deep and 83% from the free-throw line. He announced in May that he will be attending Spire Academy (Ohio) for his senior season.
CaneSport’s Take
While listed as a small forward, we think that Constanza may project as a big guard for Miami at the college level and eventually the professional level because of his experience being a team’s lead initiator, above-average handle and solid court vision. We liked his feel for the game especially. He’s a score-first player, but he knows when to swing the ball to an open man and how to put his teammates in advantageous situations. His 2.04 assist-to-turnover ratio as a junior supports this notion. Constanza’s a solid but not explosive athlete. He finishes through contact well and knows how to initiate it and create space with his body. He’s not going to blow you away with his verticality or above-the-rim finishing ability. Constanza is a fantastic outside shooter, knocking down over 50% of his shots from beyond the arc on solid volume (4.4 attempts per game). His mechanics are smooth, and his shot has good backspin. He can make difficult shots off the dribble, but we do have some questions regarding his ability to separate given his lack of elite athleticism, which could put a ceiling on his shot-making potential.
