Visalia (Calif.) Redwood four-star tight end Israel Briggs’ path to Miami wasn’t always clear and obvious, but once he committed to the Hurricanes, he fully locked in and looked forward to signing day.

Briggs formally became a Hurricane Wednesday by signing with Miami after being solid in his commitment since June 24. Miami beat out LSU for the No. 302 overall prospect and No. 15 tight end after he backed off a premature commitment to Arizona State in April. Miami immediately became the team to beat following an in-school check-up from tight ends coach Cody Woodiel and a secret visit to campus earlier this spring while he was still committed to Arizona State.

Briggs shut down his recruitment immediately after committing to Miami. His pledge came about two weeks after his official visit.

“I really checked every box off at Miami when I went down there for my official visit (June 13),” Briggs told CaneSport. “Coach (Cody) WoodielAlec (Da Silva), coach (Mario) Cristobal, really the whole staff kept in touch with me through the rough and through the times I was shining. Building that relationship for a year, they were the most on me too. It was bound to happen.”

Briggs’ strong connection with Woodiel played a meaningful role in his decision to commit to Miami, but Da Silva also earned his flowers by keeping in steady contact, leading several of his visits and showing hospitality to Briggs and those who visited with him.

Briggs returned to Miami for the Hurricanes’ game against Notre Dame.

“They looked amazing,” Briggs said following Miami’s season-opening win over the Fighting Irish. “You could just see in the locker room it was just a great atmosphere. You could just see the team is just way closer this year and the defense is way meaner.”

Miami recruited the 6-foot-3.5, 205-pound tight end as a flex tight end capable of stretching the field vertically and being a threat in the passing game. He should be a great complement to a Miami’s tight end room as the Hurricanes continue to diversify the position with different playing styles – Luka Gilbert and 2026 tight end signee Gavin Mueller as more traditional tight ends, Brock Schott and Elijah Lofton in H-back type roles and Briggs as an explosive receiving threat.

He’ll be a January enrollee.

CaneSport’s Take

Briggs is still a raw talent but hyper-athletic with tons of upside and encouraging traits that suggest he could be a dominant flex tight end at the next level. There’s a great chance we’ll be hearing his name for years to come.
