Mineral City (Ohio) Tuscarawas Valley four-star offensive tackle Ben Congdon first rose on Miami’s radar last December when the Hurricanes offered the 6-foot-7, 270-pound prospect. Wednesday, almost exactly a year after Congdon first received his Miami offer, he formally signed with The U.

The No. 129 overall prospect and No. 14 offensive tackle put pen to paper with the Hurricanes as one of six offensive line signees and one of three blue-chip pledges (joining No. 1 overall prospect Jackson Cantwell and four-star lineman Joel Ervin). Congdon first visited Miami in mid-January for a weekend-long unofficial visit before returning to campus March 3 – this time to commit to the Canes.

Alabama made a brief run at Congdon this spring and hosted him for a visit in late March, but Miami remained the strong leader through it all. He only visited Miami this summer and fall.

“I feel pretty good (about committing to Miami),” Congdon told CaneSport a month after his pledge. “Just love seeing coach (Alex) Mirabal and coach (Mario) Cristobal coaching, they’re just really good coaches. I’d really love to be under them. …Just the way they teach, just the way coach Cristobal and coach Mirabal get after it, the way coach Mirabal coaches up his meeting rooms, just all around a great coaching style.”

Scout’s Take: Miami commit Ben Congdon is highly-rated OL with huge potential

On3/Rivals was the first major database to list Congdon as a four-star or top-300 player and was high on his 34-inch wingspan, 10-inch hands combined with his hip flexibility, bend and violence in the run game. Rivals national scout Cody Belliare feels he shows a tremendous amount of potential and impressed over the last two years.

“Very high-floor prospect that will always be an enforcer in the run game, true ceiling will be determined by how he develops his balance and body control in pass protection, but has all the physical and athletic tools to get there,” Bellaire said.

CaneSport’s Take

Congdon has the perfect build for an offensive tackle and will easily be able to get 300 pounds after an offseason in Miami’s weight room. He’s been a steady riser in Rivals’ rankings as he’s continued to show an impressive combination of traits, although the next step will now be to consistently put it all together against Miami-caliber defensive linemen and linebackers. He could end up being another major get for the Hurricanes.
