WHAT’S UP TODAY

First up this morning in your Miami Hurricanes news?

This morning Matt Shodell tackles why Miami’s offensive line holds the key to a win over Notre Dame.

And our Luke Chaney ranks the QBs the Canes will face … in order of how he sees them difficulty-wise.

In recruiting?

We brought you the big new commitment last night – Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons four-star 2027 receiver Demarcus DeRoche spoke with us about his decision. There’s also an analysis of his play to check out.

Florida and South Carolina haven’t given up on four-star Miami receiver commit Somourian Wingo since he announced his pledge to the Hurricanes July 17. He updates the latest.

Plus the high school football season will formally kick off for most South Florida high schools this weekend, including a number of which that will be featured in the Broward County High School National Football Showcase Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Miami-Dade county schools will also begin their seasons this weekend, although prominent Broward schools will be featured on television. We break down which games matter and what Miami fans should look for.

MESSAGE BOARD POST OF THE DAY

Thoughts on this year’s team … Posted by advarkas

(1) I think that this 2025 Miami Hurricane team will be Mario’s most complete team in the history of his head coaching career. A lot of physicality on both offense and defense, speed everywhere, a Top-10 CFB QB, winnable conference, a competent OC and DC, and a great mix of upperclassmen and lower classmen spread out across the roster. This is a roster built on great high school recruiting, and not overly relying on the Portal. Beck, Lucas, and Blay are going to shine as key Portal guys.

(2) No, 1,000 Yard RB and no 1,000 Yard WR. I think that this offense will see several 600-900 total yards guys, and Beck will be capable and comfortable getting the ball to 6-9 different guys to produce yards and touchdowns. Better balanced team means more games akin to 31-20, rather than feeling like we have to score 40+ each game to win.

(3) With the addition of Blay and a new dc, Mesidor and Bain will each double their sack totals from last year —> 5.5 to 11 and 3.5 to 7, respectively. I think Mesidor can be a First Round pick with a good statistical year and the team winning big games.

(4) Record will be 9-3 or 10-2, depending on the Notre Dame game. I think winning the Notre Dame game out of the gate is essential. At home to start the season, and winning it immediately sends a message to UF, FSU, and the rest of the ACC. Schedule is tougher than last year – must start strong.

(5) I think we’ll continue to struggle with Special Teams impact play. Just don’t see the emphasis and elite special teams play on blocking FGs and Punts, and returning kickoffs and punts for touchdowns. Where is our next elite special teams impact player?

I think that 9-3 is realistic, but I’ll be a bit more optimistic and predict 10-2 with an ACC CG appearance against Clemson.

MIAMI HURRICANES QUOTE OF THE DAY

DeMarcus DeRoche, Class of 2027 Miami Hurricanes
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons junior athlete DeMarcus DeRoche is ranked No. 133 overall in the country in the class of 2027. (Rivals)

“Miami is the right place because it really has everything you really need. It’s Tight End University. It has defense. The coaching staff has everything you could really want for a coaching staff. On defense, I play defensive end, and Jason Taylor was a Hall-of-Famer and is coaching at Miami.”
