Miami Hurricanes baseball struggles again in midweek game, loses 3-0 at FAU
Despite a career night from Ashton Crowther, the University of Miami baseball team fell short to the Florida Atlantic Owls, 3-0, Tuesday evening at FAU Baseball Stadium.
Crowther tossed 6 1/3 innings in his third career start, holding FAU (17-9) to two runs. The southpaw struck out five batters, setting down 10 Owls in a row from the fourth frame into the seventh.
As sharp as Crowther was, Owls veteran right-hander Benjamin Smith (2-1) was nearly perfect.
Smith limited the Hurricanes (15-13) to just three hits across five shutout innings. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound hurler retired 14 of the 17 batters he faced, throwing 41 of his 56 pitches for strikes.
FAU relievers Steven Andrews, Sam Drumheller and Danny Trehey (2) scattered two hits the rest of the way to blank the visitors.

The Owls produced two tallies in the third behind an RBI single from sophomore Patrick Ward and run-scoring double from junior John Schroeder.
Senior second baseman Christian Adams plated an insurance run in the eighth, which proved to be enough cushion for the FAU bullpen.
The Hurricanes continue their four-game road swing Friday, as Miami visits No. 9 Duke. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field.
