The Miami Hurricanes basketball team got its chance to regroup off its first loss of the season to Florida, trouncing overmatched Elon on Thursday night at the Watsco Center, 99-72.

Despite the margin of victory, there were still some early issues lingering for the Canes that also popped up in the prior game. Namely, some inconsistent shooting from outside with UM four for 14 from three-point range in the first half while making six of 10 free throws in the first 20 minutes as well.

That helped keep the game close, as Miami’s lead ranged from one point with 5:10 to go in the opening half to as many as 10 with 1:41 to go at the break. The halftime score: Miami 48, Elon 41.

The Canes started hitting outside shots in the second half, and that made it sheer domination. It started with two three-pointers from Dante Allen and another from Tru Washinton that were part of a 11-0 run that gave the Canes a 66-41 lead early in the second half. That was cut to nine, but UM then went on massive scoring runs from the 8:49 mark until 2:04 was left to open up a 25-point advantage. During that time frame there were runs of 4-0, 7-0 and 8-0.

In the end the Canes wound up making nine of 24 three-pointers (five of 10 in the second half from long range), and the team shot 54.4 percent from the floor for the game while Elon hit on 51.0 percent of its shots (10-21 threes).

Three players scored 18 points for Miami – Tre Donaldson (six of 11 shooting along with five assist), Washington (7-9 shooting, 10 rebounds, 3 assists) and Shelton Henderson (8-12 shooting). Malik Reneau had 17 points on seven of 14 shooting with five rebounds and four assists, and Allen had 14 points including three of five three-pointers.

Also of note is Miami center Ernest Udeh Jr. was sidelined for the game due to a lower-body injury. He had started in all four games this season for the Hurricanes, averaging a team-high 9.3 rebounds to go along with 7.3 points. With him out it was Allen getting the start.

Miami forced 18 turnovers while committing 10, and UM had a 37-23 rebounding advantage. The Canes hit 16 of 23 free throws.

Up next for the Miami is Delaware State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at home.
