The Miami Hurricanes held their second scrimmage of the fall Sunday morning on campus. The scrimmage was closed with the exception of a small group of select invited guests.

And afterward Head Coach Mario Cristobal shared his take in an in house interview.

“The offense got in gear early, did it both on the ground and hit some big plays in the passing game,” Cristobal said. “And then the defense did respond, which is what you want to see. And then the offense responded again. Last week (in the first fall scrimmage) felt the defense had the upper hand. Today felt the offense had the upper hand.”

He added that the team was heavy with its substitutions to get a good look at various personnel.

“We’ll check out the film, see who did well, who didn’t, keep going from here,” Cristobal said.

On defense Cristbal says the physicality and run defense stood out in scrimmage 1 but that it was less consistent today when the team started rotating guys in behind the starters.

“At times they did (look good), at times they didn’t,” Cristobal said, adding “On offense at times guys stepped up and blocked the way they are supposed to block with physicality, other times like a fourth and one stop by the defense – unbelievable play by the defense and unacceptable on offense. So we got what we want in terms of the back and forth, a team that is now in practice 15 and you feel the fatigue and fought through it. Because we had to push today.”

The team also did special teams work with the ones, twos and threes, including the return game.

“We feel really strongly about those units,” Cristobal said.

“Now it’s getting regimented – time management is critical,” Cristobal said.
