Miami Hurricanes' Look For Kicking Consistency, Land Bert Auburn As A Transfer From Texas

The transfer carousel is in full swing when it comes to placekicker at the University of Miami. So try to follow along. First the Miami Hurricanes added FAU kickoff specialist/part-time placekicker Carter Davis in the first portal window. Then, after Davis outperformed redshirt freshman kicker Abram Murray in spring practice, Murray entered the second portal window. Now? Miami has added a new kicker in the second portal window.
That would be Texas‘ Bert Auburn. He announced April 17 that he was entering the transfer portal, visited Miami April 25-26 and now has chosen the Canes as his new home.
“It’s awesome – the coaching staff treats everybody like family, I feel like I fit in here,” Auburn said. “They see me coming in, competing and shoot, just hopefully adding to the culture here and fitting in with everybody.”
He will compete with Davis in fall camp for the starting kicker job, and neither has been very consistent recently.
Davis doesn’t have much field goal experience after serving as the Owls’ kickoff specialist – he went 4-for-11 on field goals over the course of his FAU career with career-long 51-yard kick during junior season of 2024.

Auburn?
The kicker performed well at Texas his first two years starting – in 2022 he hit on 21 of 26 kicks with a long of 49 yards, and in 2023 he made 29 of 35 with a long of 54 yards. But this past season he struggled with just 16 of 25 makes (64.0 percent). His longest made field goal was 49 yards, and he was just six-for-14 on kicks of 40 or more yards.
Hence his decision to find a new home and a fresh start. Miami is betting on its ability to turn him around and get him to the form of his previous two seasons.
And now it will be interesting to see if he or Davis can emerge as a consistent kicker after Miami enjoyed the consistency of Jose Borregales and then Andy Borregales the last several years.
“They have a great reputation the last couple of years of producing top kickers and look like a good team this year to make a run,” Auburn said.
