Delaware State’s basketball team perhaps thought things couldn’t get much worse than a 2-4 start to the season that included a 40-point loss at Syracuse. Well, then Miami came along.

The Canes crushed the Hornets in ridiculous fashion on Sunday afternoon at the Watsco Center, 97-41.

The win marked the first victory by at least 50 points since the Hurricanes defeated Nova Southeastern, 108-58, on Nov. 16, 2009.  At one point Miami led by 59 points, 92-33.

If the scoreboard doesn’t show you the how overmatched this opponent was, then the stats will do it for you – Miami shot 61.3 percent from the floor to Delaware State’s 25.9 percent, and the Canes had a 44-29 rebounding advantage.

If there was a weak area for Miami it would be free throw shooting (11 of 19). The Canes made 10 of 23 threes, including 4-4 from Tre Donaldson.

Leading the way for Miami – which was missing center Ernest Udeh Jr. and guard Tru Washington due to lower body injuries – was Malik Reneau (team high 24 points on 10 of 10 shooting, 10 rebounds, 3 assists), Tre Donaldson (21 points, 8-8 shooting, 6 assists), Salih Altuntas (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Shelton Henderson (11 points, 3 assists).

The game was never in doubt from the start, as Miami shot out to an 11-2 advantage and had first half runs of 11-0 and 14-0 to open up a 50-19 advantage at the break. The second half saw Cane runs of 10-0 and 12-0.

Up next for 5-1 Miami is a massive test against No. 9 BYU in Orlando Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. at the Terry’s Chocolate ESPN Events Invitational. The team will then face either Dayton or Georgetown before a game at Ole Miss Dec. 2.

BYU has a 4-1 record including a 71-66 victory over Villanova and 98-70 thrashing of No. 23 Wisconsin The team’s lone loss was by two points to Connecticut.
