MIAMI ROSTER NUGGETS
In Gary Ferman’s recent column were several tidbits about how the team is progressing in off-season workouts.
At quarterback he shares how Emory Williams is progressing to the point where he may push Jacurri Brown for the backup job to Tyler Van Dyke. “Williams may be a true freshman, but don’t rule him out just because Brown got some playing time last season,” Ferman wrote. “Brown remains a potential star down the road. He might be the best pure athlete on the team. But he must continue to develop as a passer or it won’t likely happen at Miami.”
At running back true freshman 4-star Mark Fletcher showed up on campus and is everything coaches were hoping for, and it’ll be an open battle with Henry Parrish and others. At wide receiver? “Everyone can’t play and one or two could be fighting for their place on the roster in these off-season workouts as Miami needs to get down to the 85 scholarship limit,” Ferman wrote.

The OL key will be Samson Okunlola, who is looking to possibly start at LT, which would allow Jalen Rivers to move back to guard, and on the DL opposite DT Leonard Taylor “The competition between Purdue transfer Branson Deen and Jared Harrison-Hunte is real,” Ferman writes.
Ferman also points to an “interesting” situation at linebacker, where new addition KJ Cloyd is going to push at MLB or OLB to find a role. Francisco Mauigoa also has looked like the real deal in the middle. It’s a position that needs more depth.
Which brings us to DB, where safety is stacked atop the depth chart with Kam Kinchens and James Williams. Cornerback? Not so much. “The gauntlet has been laid out at this position with the post-spring addition of transfers Jaden Davis, Ja’Dais Richard and Demetrius Freeney,” Ferman wrote in his lengthy opinion article. “Could a louder statement have been made by coaches here as well that they are not overwhelmed by the talent base on the outside, even with presumed starters Daryl Porter, Davonte Brown and Te’Cory Couch looking decent this spring?”
